Harivansh Rai Bachchan – Father
‘Mitti ka tan, masti ka man, kshan-bhar jivan– mera parichay’ the man who introduced himself in this unique and simplistic manner was none other than Harivansh Rai Bachchan. Harivansh Rai Shrivastav alias Bachchan was born on 27th November 1907 in a Srivastava Kayastha family. He belonged to village Babupatti (Raniganj) of district Pratapgarh. He was a noted Indian poet of the early 20th century in Hindi literature. He was the eldest son of Pratap Narayan Shrivastav and Saraswati Devi. He used to be called Bachchan. He completed his formal schooling in a municipal school and followed the family tradition of attending Kayastha Paathshaalas to learn Urdu as the first step to a career in law. He later studied at the Allahabad University and Banaras Hindu University. During University days, he came under the influence of the independence movement. He even taught in the English Department at the Allahabad University from 1941 to 1952 and after that he spent the next two year in Cambridge University doing his doctoral thesis on W.B. Yeats.
Harivanshrai’s thesis got him his PhD at Cambridge. Coming back to India he again took to teaching and also served at All India Radio, Allahabad.
In 1926, at the age of 19, He got married to Shyama but she died ten years later in 1936 due to TB. Then, Bachchan again married Teji in 1941. They had two sons, Amitabh and Ajitabh.
Harivansh Rai also joined the External Affairs Ministry as an officer on Special duty. He wrote the famous poem ‘Madhushala’. He is also remembered for his Hindi translations of Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Othello and also the Bhagvad Gita. However in Nov 1984 he wrote his last poem ‘Ek November 1984’ on Indira Gandhi’s assassination.
His work also got a space in many of the Hindi films such as Silsila (Rang Barse), Agneepath etc.
Harivanshrai was nominated to the Indian Rajya Sabha in 1966 and the government gave him the Sahitya Akademi award three years later. In 1976 he was honored with the Padma Bhushan for his immense contribution to Hindi literature. He was also honored with many literary awards for his contribution to the world of letters. Amitabh Bachchan even today recites many of his father’s couplets in various events.
Harivansh died at the age of 96 in 2003 due to various respiratory ailments.
Mother- Teji Bachchan
Millenium star Amitabh’s mother Teji Bachchan was born on 12th August 1914 into a Khatri Sikh Punjabi family in Faisalabad, Punjab, British India and was the second wife of Harivansh Rai Bachchan. She was the daughter of Sardar Khajaan Singh, a barrister at Faisalabad. Teji Bachchan was a social activist and she was also known to be a confidant of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
She was also an English teacher when she met Harivansh at the Allahabad University. Both got married in Allahabad in 1941.
While Bachchan always remained engrossed in his muse, Teji handled family matters. Even in social engagements, the poet willingly played second fiddle to his gregarious wife. Teji Bachchan performed Lady Macbeth in her husband’s Hindi adaptation of Macbeth. She also gave a cameo appearance in Yash Chopra’s Kabhi Kabhi.
Teji was appointed as one of the Directors of the Film Finance Corporation in 1973. Its main objective was to finance the production of purposeful films of good quality with a view to improving the general standards of the medium.
Teji Bachchan died at the age of 93 in the Lilawati Hospital on 21 December 2007 after prolonged illness.
Wife- Jaya Bachchan
Bollywood Shensha’s wife Jaya Bachchan was born in 1948 and is a politician and former film actress famously known as Jaya Bahaduri. She debuted in film Guddi in 1971, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Guddi was a success, and soon she shifted to Mumbai and then there was no looking back.
She was highly appreciated for her performances in films including Uphaar (1971), Koshish (1972), Kora Kagaz (1974), and among many others. Jaya also shared screen space with her husband.
She first acted with Amitabh Bachchan in the film, Bansi Birju (1972), followed by B.R. Ishara’s Ek Nazar also in the same year. Amitabh had undergone a string of flops, and when most lead heroines refused to work him, in Salim-Javed scripted, Zanjeer (1973), she stepped into the film. The film became a big hit and gave rise to Amitabh Bachchan’s angry-young-man image. Further they were both paired in films like Abhimaan (1973), Chupke Chupke (1975) and Sholay (1975).
Their daughter Shweta was born while Jaya was working on Sholay. She then retired from films and focused on family. Her last film as a lead actress was Silsila, which was released in 1981, opposite her husband. During the late 1980s she wrote the story for the film Shahenshah which starred her husband in the lead.
After a gap of nearly 18 years, she returned to Films in 1998 and did a couple of films. In 2000 she starred in Fiza for which she received the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for her work. She also starred in Karan Johar’s family drama ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’ with her husband. She also worked in his next film ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ for which she bagged a Filmfare Award. In 2007, she worked with son Abhishek in ‘Laaga Chunari Mein Daag’.
Jaya was first elected in 2004 as a member of parliament, representing Rajya Sabha. She was re-elected in 2012. Jaya also has been awarded the Padma Shri by the government of India apart from many awards and numerous recognitions. She is also a recipient of the “Yash Bharati Samman”, UP’s highest award.
Son- Abhishek Bachchan
Abhishek Bachchan is the son of Megastar Amitabh, born on 5th February 1976. He is an actor, producer and occasional playback singer.
Abhishek started his career with the film Refugee in 2000. And after a period of quite unsuccessful films, he finally received much praise in the action thriller film ‘Dhoom’, which was a big hit. Abhishek received critical acclaim for his supporting role in Yuva (2004), and starred in commercially successful films like Bunty Aur Babli (2005), Sarkar (2005), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006) and Guru (2007). He also worked with his father Amitabh in many films such as the Sarkar series, Bunty aur Babli, etc. He produced Paa along with Sunil Manchanda which won him the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi.
He is married to actress and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai. The couple got married on 20 April 2007, in a private ceremony at the Bachchan residence, Prateeksha, Mumbai. Aishwarya gave birth to a baby girl named Aradhya in November 2011.
Abhishek worked with Aishwarya in the period romance Umrao Jaan, a remake of the 1981 film, Guru in 2007, after their marriage, for which he earned much critical acclaim, Dhoom2 in 2006, Sarkar Raj in 2008 and many others.
Abhishek is also involved in the operations of his father’s company, originally known as ABCL, and renamed as AB Corp. Ltd. Recently, Abhishek starred in Farah Khan’s Happy New Year, a film which featured multiple actors. And the actor earned much appreciation for the role he played in the movie. Though Abhishek has failed to create the same magic and match the iconic personality of his father he still has a long way to go and he has started making an impression with a few of his last releases.

Daughter- Shweta Nanda
Shweta Nanda is the daughter of Amitabh and Jaya. She perhaps is the only member in the family who doesn’t have a filmi background. She was a journalist with CNN IBN News channel. She also hosted a show NextGen, aired on NDTV Profit. In 2007, she appeared with Jaya Bachchan on an episode of Koffee with Karan along with Hema Malini and her daughter Esha Deol. She did modelling for the first time and was seen in one of the issues of L’Officiel India. In 2005, Shweta walked the ramp with her parents and her brother for AIDS awareness.
Shweta is married to Business tycoon Nikhil Nanda who is the Managing Director of Escorts Limited.
She too is involved in the business. The couple is blessed with two children- daughter Navya Naveli and son Agastya.
Daughter-in-law: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan
Indian actress and former Miss World Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is the daughter-in-law of Amitabh Bachchan. Born in 1973, Aishwarya had established a successful career in Bollywood before her marriage with Abhishek. Both of them did quite a few films together, before and after marriage.
After winning the crown of Miss World 1994, she began receiving offers for films. She made her acting debut with the 1997 Tamil film Iruvar and had her first Hindi film release was ‘Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya’ in the same year. Her first commercial success was the Tamil romantic drama Jeans in 1998. She achieved great success in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam released in 1999. She won two Best Actress awards at Filmfare for her performances in them. Aishwarya also acted alongside Shahrukh Khan and Madhuri Dixitin in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s love-saga Devdas, an adaptation of Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel of the same name which became a big hit. The film was screened at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival and was featured by Time in their listing of the “10 best films of the millennium”. Her performances in Dhoom2, Historical romance Jodha Akbar were highly appreciated. She is also associated with Bengali and Tamil Cinema.
In 1999, Rai began dating Bollywood actor Salman Khan, their relationship was often reported in the media until the couple separated in 2001. Aishwarya even alleged to have been beaten up by Khan and finally both got separated.
Abhishek and Aishwarya appeared in Dhai Akshar Prem Ke (in which her Salman Khan had a brief appearance) and Kuch Naa Kaho, Abhishek Bachchan fell in love with the beautiful actress while shooting for Dhoom 2. Their engagement was announced in January 2007 and later confirmed by his father, Amitabh Bachchan. The couple tied the knot on 20 April 2007 according to traditional Hindu rites of the Bunt community, to which she belongs. Aishwarya gave birth to a baby girl in 2011. The little princess became popularly known by the name of “Beti B”, a name attributed to her by fans and the media, since the couple took over four months to name their daughter. The baby girl was finally named Aaradhya Bachchan in March 2012. After Aradhya, Aishwarya mostly looked after her family and did not sign any films for almost 5 years.
In 2011, she received a lot of negative publicity for failing to lose her post-pregnancy weight as is apparently “required” of a public figure. But soon she silenced her critics when she walked the red carpet at 67th Cannes Film Festival. Afterwards, she made it to many of the magazine covers.
She is now coming back on the screen after a long break. Her much talked about upcoming projects are Sanjay Gupta’s action thriller Jazbaa, co-starring Shabana Azmi and Irrfan Khan and Karan Johar’s romantic drama Ae Dil Hai Mushkil along with Ranbir kapoor and Anushka Sharma.
Brother- Ajitabh Bachchan
Born in Allahabad, both Amitabh and Ajitabh grew up together and studied at Nainital. They stayed in Kolkata and that’s where Ajitabh married Ramola and moved to London.
Initially Ajitabh used to look after ABCL, Amitabh’s ambitious company but the company incurred heavy losses and both brothers had a falling out.
Though Ajitabh and Ramola are divorced now, they have four children. They have one son named Bhim Bachchan and three daughters, Nilima Bachchan, Naina Bachchan and Namrata Bachchan.
In 2012, Ajitabh is known to have moved in to Amitabh’s home Prateeksha and is presently staying there. The two brothers are known to be reunited.
