Sati marries Shiva against her father’s wishes and starts staying in Kailash. Daksha organizes a Yajna where all Gods and Goddesses are invited except Shiva. Sati travels all the way to her parental home to question her father about it. Daksha instead insults Lord Shiva and this makes Sati give up her body in Pranagni – a fire that emanates from her own body.

Shiva all grief stricken at this, turns into Virabhadra and performs an incarnation of a fierce mood known as Aaveshavataar. He slays Daksha but his wife’s prayers makes Shiva restore his life. He leaves with the burnt corpse of Sati and Lord Vishnu dismembers the pieces of her body and scatters them into the universe with the use of his divine powers. Shiva in turn transforms the pieces into Shakti Peethas.

Sati is reborn as Parvati, daughter to king of the Himalayas, Himavan and Mainavati and sister to the river Goddess Ganga. When she matures, the memories of her previous birth awaken in her and she undertakes the most rigorous austerity in order to please Shiva. Lord Shiva is pleased with her severe austerity and they get married in the presence of all gods and goddesses.
