Meet Sonam Kapoor’s Family – Anil, Sunita, Rhea and Harshvardhan Kapoor
Father: Anil Kapoor
Mother: Sunita Kapoor
Sister: Rhea Kapoor
Brother: Harshvardhan Kapoor
Cousin: Arjun Kapoor
Anil Kapoor – Father
Sonam Kapoor’s father and well renowned actor Anil Kapoor who has acted in over 100 films, including Hollywood flicks such as the Oscar – winning Slumdog Millionaire and Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol, openly admires his daughter’s acting skills. He wants to share screen space with Sonam but not as her father.
He feels that it would be really boring as he would end up playing the obvious role (of her dad), and there wouldn’t be anything new to offer to the audience. ‘We keep getting a lot of offers but nothing great has come our way. We really want to work together but I am looking for something more interesting and dramatic’, said Mr. Kapoor.
Sonam, nicknamed ‘Giraffe’ by her father, is supposed to star in the remake of the 1980 hit, Khoobsoorat, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, which starred everlasting diva Rekha and Rakesh Roshan in lead roles.
Her doting dad will be co – producing the movie. Sonam will be seen playing the role of Rekha and Ashok Kumar’s role will be played by Bengali superstar Prasenjit Chatterjee. ‘Sonam would do a great job with that role and I am looking forward to see her in the role. She’s a brilliant actor’, said Mr. Kapoor.
Sonam seems to be very happy about the success of two back to back hits with Raanjhana and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. She received lot of praises from her father Anil Kapoor.
Sonam insists that she has never tried to cash-in on the success of her father Anil Kapoor but rather wants to focus on creating her own identity in the film industry. She maintains that she is close to her father but does not want to use his fame as a stepping stone.
Mr. Kapoor has worked so hard all his life to be Anil Kapoor and Sonam doesn’t want to use that for herself because that is all his. ‘He deserves more than that. Suppose I don’t do well, I don’t want my life to reflect on his life,” said Sonam.
Sonam’s dad gets very upset as she doesn’t take too many pictures with him or does films or take money from him. He keeps on saying ‘why am I earning, it is all for you people’. But at the same time, Mr. Kapoor is proud of Sonam that she’s doing so well on her own!
Sonam is very fond of her daddy, who keeps embarrassing her by talking about her achievements all the time. He clicks pictures and shows to everyone that ‘it’s my daughter’. But at the end of the day, Mr. Kapoor seems to be an awesome dad and Sonam loves her dad!
Sonam seeks advice from her daddy dearest for her roles. He’s like her real life hero. She can’t choose which movie of his she likes better, whether it is Mr India or Woh Saat Din or Ram Lakhan. ‘He’s such an accomplished actor and so any advice coming from him has to be very carefully thought about. He has always guided me the right way!’ said Sonam. But she seems to be very stubborn at times and gets into huge arguments with her dad, over which he has a great laugh.
She is proud for her dad that he has bagged successful projects even at this age. He seems to be working as hard as young boys and is giving them a run for their money!
According to Mr. Kapoor, Sonam is free to marry anyone of her choice. He would be okay with Sonam marring anyone of any ethnicity as long as she’s happy. Looks like he isn’t judgmental about any religion, ethnicity or anything else. In fact it would be fine enough for him even if she marries a Chinese or a Japanese guy! But looks like Sonam’s not yet ready to tie the knot as she feels that she’s a bit too young to settle down right now!
Sunita Kapoor – Mother
Sonam Kapoor is very close to her mother Sunita. She teases her father quite often that ‘thank god I just got a smile from you and I am just like mom’. Her mother kept her away from the glam world in the beginning which made her more sensible.
Sunita doesn’t like to be in glam world as she feels awkward. She (Sunita) says that she’s not an actress and why should she be in the limelight just because she’s Sonam’s mom or Anil Kapoor’s wife!
Mrs. Kapoor used to choose hubby Anil Kapoor’s clothes for various movies like Judaai, Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja, Loafer, Beta and Calcutta Mail. And now it’s Sonam! Sonam is known to be a fashion chameleon and daddy Anil credits her style sensibilities to her mom Sunita, a former model. Be it her on – screen style or her off screen get-up, Sonam is every fashion buff’s darling!
Sunita takes care of daughters Sonam and Rhea’s clothes. Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali seems to have made good use of her (Sunita’s) style sense. Anil said, ‘She has that quality that she can perfectly tell what looks good where’. During Sonam’s debut film Saawariya, Sanja Leela Bhansali would take Sunita’s help to create the sets or background and adjust them accordingly.
Sonam is a fairly simple person at heart and the difficulty that she faces playing characters is that she really takes them to her heart. She starts living her characters and the sensitivity of the character she’s playing gets to her so much that at times she falls sick. Her mom gets worried for her sometimes because she still hasn’t learnt to disassociate herself from the character that she’s playing in a film, be it Bittoo’s (in Delhi 6) or Aisha’s (in Aisha) problems, it becomes hers while she’s doing the film. But she seems to be learning now, to leave her onscreen character at the shoot!
Rhea Kapoor – Sister
Rhea is a stylist and is well known for styling her father and sister in films like Aisha and Players.
Looks like the Kapoor sisters have ventured into an extremely stylish and classic line of clothing. They are coming up with a line that is elegant and at the same time something that can be worn by all.
Both of them are excited about the whole venture and Sonam’s fashion sense is always taken into serious consideration by most people. Sonam is one actress that people seek when in need of some tips and fashion help. She and her sister seem to be the perfect duo for this venture.
Sonam after her back to back success with Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Raanjhanna, got on board with her sister for this project (line of clothing). She is the first one in her generation to have started her own line of clothing. She is one of the most stylish actresses the industry has today which could also be seen in her movie Aisha!
Recently there was buzz that Rhea is all set to tie the knot with her boyfriend Karan Boolani. Dismissing the reports, Sonam said that her sister is still a baby and has no plans of getting married any time soon, at least not for the next 5 – 6 years as she is the younger one.
Rhea was supposed to start another film directed by Karan Johar and so people might have got confused between making a film and getting married. ‘Fortunately for me my sister is not getting married, because I like her in the house’, said Sonam.
Apart from being a stylist, Rhea Kapoor has also worked as an assistant director in films like Wake Up Sid starring heartthrob Ranbir Kapoor and talented bong beauty Konkona Sen Sharma. She also produced Aisha which starred sis Sonam opposite Dev D actor Abhay Deol.
Harshvardhan Kapoor– Brother
Sonam’s younger brother, Harshvardhan is keen to make it big in Bollywood much like Sonam. Taking a cue from his elder sister Sonam, he seems to be keen on following her footsteps to Bollywood.
Rumour mills say that Sonam is trying hard to get her brother and actress Priyanka Chopra together. Sonam heaped praises on her brother, ‘Harsh is tall, nice and handsome’. She seems to have acted as a matchmaker by tweeting about her bro and Priyanka that ‘My brother thinks you are the hottest woman alive and wants you to know he is young, single and very good looking’. She can actually get her brother and Priyanka together but it’s not that easy. Priyanka seems to be far too busy with her current films and has clearly stated that she has no time for love. Harshvardhan, who studied screenplay writing and acting from a film school in America, is currently working as an assistant director with Anurag Kashyap for Bombay Velvet, (starring Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma) like di Sonam who too started her film career by assisting Sanjay Leela Bhansali on his critically acclaimed film Black.
While Sonam Kapoor did not get any help from her family when she launched her film career, she helped her little brother Harshvardhan land a role in Mirza Sahiba, a unique love tragedy based on folklore with a contemporary touch, directed by Rakeysh Mehra, with whom she has done two films (Delhi 6 and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag).Sonam’s Daddy Anil Kapoor informs us that it was Sonam who got Harsh into the film. In fact, she was supposed to be a part of the film, but she opted out. But looks like Sonam is reluctant to take the credit. She said that Harsh has got the role on his own merit. He’s excited about doing the film. Harsh is very talented and more than that he is in the best hands. He met Rakeysh, showed him some of his auditions and worked hard to get the role on his own.
Sonam is just four – and – a – half years older than bro Harsh and therefore feels that she’s not qualified enough to advice him. The only thing that she suggested to him was to work hard and never leave anything half-way because those qualities have stood her well. Harsh is only 23 and there’s time for him to find his own space. He is a wonderful actor and if he works hard, he can achieve any heights, said Sonam!
Mama’s boy Harsh seems to have turned into a cool dude. He is very much close to his gorgeous sis Sonam. He has got a Tattoo of sisters Sonam and Rhea on his shoulder signifying ‘deep love’ for his sisters. His sisters are the two strong pillars of his Life!
Sonam shares a strong bond with bro Harsh. Harshvardhan is going to make his debut with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s movie Mirza Sahiba. But when Rakeysh approached him for the first time, Harsh told him clearly that he is not interested in acting. Later, Rakeysh told Sonam Kapoor to convince her brother to say yes to his movie. Sonam Kapoor convinced him to give acting a try.
Rakeysh wanted a fresh face and he liked Harsh, as he has the fierce intensity of a lover in him, combined with an innocent softness in his eyes. Gulzar is said to have started writing Mirza Sahiba three years ago.
Harsh’s dedication and passion has surprised Rakeysh. He has given up Mumbai and gone to Delhi to focus on preparing for his character. An entire team has been set up for him. Rakeysh personally visits him every week. ‘It’s still some time way from shooting and therefore he could’ve started preparing later. But he has chosen to be in Delhi from now. It feels correct to have him there. Harsh has beautifully adapted to the character’, said Rakeysh. Harsh seems to focus better in Delhi as it keeps him away from day – to – day distractions!
Arjun Kapoor – Cousin Brother
Ishaqzaade actor and heartthrob Arjun Kapoor happens to be Sonam Kapoor’s first cousin on her father’s side.
Sonam and Arjun went to the same school, and although they hardly used to hang out together, she would conveniently make him her protective, elder brother whenever she was in trouble.
Sonam seems to have been overwhelmed by the performance of cousin Arjun in his debut movie Ishaqzaade opposite bubbly beauty Parineeti Chopra. She was excited to watch Arjun’s first film and also made sure to watch it as soon as she could.
But instead of laughing at the humorous one – liners, Sonam cried. ‘Halfway through the film, I couldn’t stop crying. It was such a proud moment’, said Sonam after watching the movie!
Sonam and Arjun were born only 10 days apart and are very close to each other. Besides being cousins, they are also good friends. Being the same age, Arjun and Sonam seems to be sharing the closeness like that of twins. Sonam has always relied on him on matters of the heart.
