There was a time when only those Bollywood heroines who were ready to give it all up, got married. Retirement was considered to be the only route after marriage. It was unsaid, but understood, that after marriage, Bollywood heroines ceased being the object of desire for their fans and became inaccessible to them.
Recent marriages of top Bollywood heroines have emphatically underlined the fact that the present Indian audience is growing up and becoming more receptive to married heroines.
Vidya has, with her last few emphatic hits in films like Kahaani and Dirty Picture, become one of the top A-listers of Bollywood, who dares to think differently. It was then quite obvious that her legions of fans and the curious would wonder about her romantic status.
When the nosy media started talking about her budding relationship with Siddharth Roy Kapur, the 38 year old CEO of UTV Motion Pictures, people perked up their ears. Siddharth had previously been married twice and both times the marriages had ended in divorce. Vidya got to know Siddharth in 2010, when she was shooting for the UTV produced film, No One Killed Jessica. She went public with their relationship much later, in May 2012.
Everyone one was delighted, when the wedding dates were confirmed, finally. Vidya and Siddharth’s marriage celebrations were a three day affair, which began on the 11th of December, 2012 with a private sangeet, which was held at the “La Mode” Banquet Hall in Juhu, Mumbai. She kept her guest list small and only close family members of the bride and the groom attended the program. She wore a traditional silk Pattu saree and traditional gold jewellery, while Siddharth was dressed in a white embroidered kurta and pajama.

Rekha arrives for Mehendi
The next day Vidya had her mehendi ceremony, which was held at her residence in Khar, in Mumbai. This time too, her guest list was small with only close friends and family members invited for the do; Rekha was the only celebrity invited to her mehendi. She kept the mehendi design on her hands simple and basic. She wore a beautiful Sabyasachi Mukherjee saree creation, which she draped in a traditional Bengali style. Her adornments were pearls set in floral-like designs and she glowed in the way only a bride-to-be can. She had the loving presence of her mother, Saraswathy and father, P R Balan. Her elder sister Priya and brother-in-law Kedar looked after the arrangements and her twin niece Ira, nephew Ruhaan, were also present.
The Baraatis At Vidya Balan Wedding
Vidya Balan House
Vidya got married to her beau on the 14th of December, 2012, in a ceremony, which was a mix of both South Indian and Punjabi rites and took around an hour and catered to both the bride as well as the groom as she is a Tamilian Brahmin and he is a Punjabi. Interestingly, her sister, Priya had also got married on the 14th of December.
Contrary to widespread speculation that Vidya would have a temple wedding at the Sri Subramania temple in Chembur, she got married at the ‘Green Mile’ Bungalow, which is in Bandra and is often used for film and TV serial shootings; a part of the wedding ceremony was also said to have been conducted at Siddharth’s residence in Cuffe Parade.
Vidya underwent three saree changes during the wedding ceremony; Sabyasachi, her personal favourite designer had created sarees in silk of warm shades including mustard, which had been sourced from Chennai for the Tamilian part of the ceremony and when she came out for an photo-op with the waiting media, she wore a bridal red silk with gold saree, with gold jewellery. She also wore the typical Punjabi choodas or red and white bangles of a Punjabi bride. Siddharth wore an elegant yellow kurta and pink turban for his wedding. The food served was South Indian cuisine. The guest list of the marriage ceremony was again, kept small and restricted to only close family and friends. Siddharth Kapur’s baraatis included his two brothers Aditya Roy Kapur and Kunaal Roy Kapur , who are both actors in Bollywood. Kunaal Kapur came with his wife Shayonti and his son.
After a honeymoon in the exotic islands of the Caribbean , the couple was present at their post marriage party given in their honour by Siddharth’s boss, UTV’s head Ronnie Screwvala and his wife, Zarine, in January. They had invited the industry folks to their apartment at Breach Candy, to join the newly married couple, in celebration. There was a good turnout of stars, producers and directors at the bash, with almost all the A-list stars making their presence felt and staying on till the early hours of the morning.
